Flight Simulator Controls – Build Your Home Cockpit
If you have been using your flight simulator software for some time, there will come a time when you would like to upgrade your flying experience and make it more realistic. The best way of doing that is to ditch the keyboard, mouse and even the joystick and go and start building up some controls for your home cockpit. Even with a few basic controls, you flying will be totally transformed.
There are a number of controls that you can connect to your flight simulator software to make it more realistic, but the first place to start may be with your computer setup. Is your computer powerful enough to display the graphics smoothly? Flight simulator software require a powerful computer and high end graphics card to display the best picture of your virtual world. If you are able to afford it, also look at getting a couple of extra screens. A great setup is three screens, one for the view forward and two more, each dedicated to the left and right views.
Once you have got the display and monitors setup, you can then think about the controls. The first control to add is a flight simulator yoke. This is the most basic control and the one that will make the most difference to your flying. The yoke or control column as it is also known as, controls the elevators and ailerons. Pushing the yoke forward or backwards will allow you to control the pitch of the aircraft. Turning the yoke left or right will control the roll of the place. As well as controlling the elevator and ailerons, most yokes have additional controls for the throttle, mix, prop and programmable buttons and levers that you can assign to anything that you want.
The yoke will make a huge difference to your flying, but there is one more control that will complete your home cockpit. Rudder pedals obviously control the rudder, allowing you to use the yoke and rudder pedal controls in combination to make turns. The rudder pedals also have toe brakes so that you will no longer be searching the keyboard for the right key, but can use your feet to brake.
Upgrade your computer and monitors, add a flight sim yoke and rudder pedals and you will have a complete home cockpit. You won’t look back and wonder how anyone could ever fly with a keyboard and mouse.
