A Review Of Sonic 4: Episode 1 And What It Has To Offer
The Sonic franchise was once the pinnacle of videogaming, with the first couple of games topping the polls every time thanks to their vibrant, fun and accessable playing. The appearance of new-gen consoles and higher expectations led to Sega trying out fresh tricks with the tried and tested formula by introducing 3D environments, on-the-rail games and more. In recent years, the Sonic franchise has deviated even more so, with titles presening Sonic as a knight, a werehog, and more. After years of mourning, fans of the classic will get their wishes addressed with the new release; Sonic 4: Episode 1.
Whilst some of the current games within the series have been brilliant, Sonic 4: Episode 1 would seem to be what players have been ready to be made for a long time; with a return to to the original gaming experience. In Sonic 4: Episode 1, Sonic returns to his side-scrolling adventures, with terrain highly reminiscent of those seen within the retro games, like the Green Hill Zone. The excess characters have been left at home too, with even trusty sidekick Tails missing from the release. Considered to be a follow-on to Sonic & Knuckles, this game sees Sonic strike out on his lonesome for new adventures.
Of course, the current generation of consoles will deliver Sonic 4: Episode 1 with stunning visuals. In spite of being a side-scroller, the character models have been created in 3D, resulting in a very polished finish. The colors are brighter than before and the myriad terrain features we fondly remember, together with the loops-the-loops, are nicely realised. The game also supports high-def, and thus has the potential to look even more stunning.
This title will be released on Wiiware, PSN and Xbox live and as the title of the game suggests, further adventures are set to follow. Will these enjoyable little offerings help carry Sonic back to the top? Only time can say. But for many who cherished the look and feel of the classics, Sonic 4: Episode 1 is a brilliant return to the formula.
