World of Warcraft Mage Talent Guide
Picking the right talent tree is very important for Mages. Where you allocate your points has a great deal of influence on how well your Mage will perform in both PVE and PVP. Redoing your talents is expensive, so if at all possible you definitely want to plan out your build and spend your talent points wisely. In this Mage Talent Guide, we will look at some of the most common mage builds.
Most Mages specialize in a tree, with a secondary tree where they place some unused talent points. The Mage class is one where you do not want to distribute your points over all the trees, since this will generally result in a weak character. In almost every case, the smart choice is to select a tree to focus on from the outset, and make sure you put the majority of your points in the chosen tree.
1. The Frost Mage
This is probably the most popular build for Mages, with good reason. The frost mage is a formidable build, with the ability to function with less mana burn, coupled with some nice mob-controlling abilities.
Here are some important forst mage talents to consider.
- Improved Frost Bolt - Frost bolt will be one of your main weapons, so max this out early.
- Icy Shards and Shatter - Anything that increases your damange or critical strike chances is a good thing, and these two talents are ones you should not go without.
- Arctic Reach - This will make your frost novas more effective by increasing the range.
- Ice Floes
- Frost Channeling - This will minimize your downtime.
- Any 1-point Talent - Icy Veins and Cold Snap are two 1-point talents you should get early on.
2. The Fire Mage
Fire Mages are also popular, especially at lower levels since the DPS is high. However, you should also expect greater downtime since your mana burn rate will be quite high.
Listed below are some key Fire Mage talents.
- Incineration
- Improved Fire Blast - This will help you take down enemies faster by reducing cool down time.
- Critical Mass
- Pyromaniac
- Burnout
- Ignite
- Any 1-point Talent
3. The Arcane Mage
Very few players will specialize in the arcane tree. Your points are generally better spent in specializing in frost or fire, so don’t pick arcane unless you are an advanced player looking for a challenge.
