– Practice the ‘rocket start.’ This is a staple of each Mario Kart game. Effectively pulling off the rocket start will give you an early edge in the competition.  To pull off the rocket start, press the accelerator button as soon as the timer reaches down to 2.  You want to perfect your timing though, as being off for only a millisecond will ruin the move.

– Collisions are bad.  As much as practical, avoid smashing into other opponents as this will reduce your speed and it will take time before you work up to your top once again.  Rather than racing side-by-side with opponents, try to tail them, so you’d know where they are.  Then overtake your enemy once your boost power is prepared.  By doing this, you’ll be miles ahead of them and out of crashing range once the boost relents.

– Either find out how to drift or find out how to let go of the gas button.  Most gamers are plain impatient.  They need to step on the gas at all times and run over each and every obstacle in a track, including walls on corners.  However, you will not be ready to make most turns at increased speed.  You will have to learn how to drift or let go of the gas button to slow you down a tad, enough to make the acute turns found in Mario Kart Wii.
