Even if your Warrior has avoided it in the past, PvP combat is in their future. Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) has brought a new emphasis to World PvP. There’s now a real time PvP battle zone called Lake Wintergrasp. There, the emphasis is on real-time World PvP. In this new zone, players battle on the live server (no instancing) to win points that allow them to shop for all sorts of rare and valuable items such as the new Heirloom items that any character in their account regardless of that character’s level can use.

With Lake Wintergrasp’s high popularity, and the increasing amount of PvP combat in other popular games, there will surely be even more World PvP in the future. So let’s talk about Warriors and PvP:

Playing a Warrior class character in World of Warcraft PvP seems straightforward. Find the enemy, then hack him to pieces! But it isn’t really that simple at all. Let me explain.

As you would imagine, Warriors excel at dealing massive amounts of physical damage to anything they get close to. Surprisingly, the best Warriors are more worried about being hurt by spells than they are about losing a sword fight. The reason for this is simple. Only Paladins and other Warriors can survive in hand to hand combat with a skilled Warrior. But a smart opponent with powerful magic or ranged attacks can make life difficult.

Unfortunately, Warriors don’t get many opportunities to go toe to toe with other Warriors in the arena. Any decent PvP player knows they won’t last long in close combat against a Warrior, so they don’t engage. Warriors often end up fighting spell casters and ranged fighters like Hunters. And that kind of combat definitely requires sound tactics, as well as a solid understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent.

A Warrior’s biggest concern is usually how to get close enough to an opponent to bring sword or axe to bear, and staying long close enough to kill the target. The other classes know better than to get you get too close, and will be doing everything they can to stay out of your range. This means you will need to use Warrior-specific skills such as Charge to start battles and Intercept to keep the enemy from dancing away once you do get closer. Once close, your Warrior will need to use other skills like Hamstring and Intimidating Shout to keep your quarry close, then load up on rage and hit the opponent as hard as possible.

Further complicating things is the way that casters and ranged fighters will be slowly sapping your strength with their annoying spells and puny arrows. That means you need to be able to use your defensive stances and spell reflects, master the timing of Intercept and Hamstring, while always being to deal massive amounts of damage to any character fool enough to end up within your weapons range.
